If you are of a normal body weight but find you have stubborn areas of fat, liposuction offers a solution. It is a form of surgery designed to create a balanced, proportionate body by permanently removing fat cells from problem areas resulting in a real improvement in your body shape. It aims to reduce those areas where diet and exercise programmes no longer work.
A small incision is made in the specified area, and a thin tube is inserted which is connected to a vacuum pump. The surgeon will manoeuvre the tube to break up and suck away the unwanted fat cells. The incisions will be stitched, and bandaged and you will need to wear an external corset following the operation.
The procedure can be performed under local or general anaesthetic. You will need to be prepared to stay in hospital overnight, and to take a week off work to recover in comfort at home. Strenuous activity should be avoided for at least a few weeks.
There will be scarring where the incisions were made, but this will fade significantly with time.
Swelling, bruising and tenderness are common but temporary, and painkillers can help to ease any discomfort.
This is a low risk operation, but as with any surgery, complications are possible. These will be explained in full beforehand by your consultant at your initial consultation.
It is advisable to seek the advice of your GP or other independent medical practitioner before proceeding with surgery.
